Cryptocurrency Fraud Is a Growing Problem Across Canada

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre reported over $309 million in cryptocurrency fraud losses in 2023, with Ontario and British Columbia accounting for the largest share. Investment fraud and romance scams are the dominant categories, with pig butchering scams increasingly common across major urban centres.

Canada's bilingual population and large immigrant communities from regions where pig butchering operations are active — including Southeast Asia and East Asia — make it a significant target. The CAFC estimates that fewer than 5% of fraud victims report their losses, suggesting actual losses are far higher.

We work with CAFC reporting systems, coordinate with RCMP cybercrime units, and engage FINTRAC-registered Canadian exchanges on freeze requests. Our team serves clients in all 10 provinces and 3 territories.
